J.C. Penney 2Q Income Up 79%

Plano, TX, August 16--J.C. Penney in the second quarter reported income from continuing operations that rose 79% to $22 million, or $0.46 a share, up from a year-ago equivalent profit of $68 million, or $0.22 a share.

Wal-Mart 2Q Earnings Up 6%

Bentonville, AR, August 16--Wal-Mart reported second-quarter earnings that rose 6% to $2.8 billion, or $0.67 per share. The company reported sales that were up 10.2% to $76.8 billion.

Mohawk Realigns Residential & Commercial Flooring

Calhoun, GA, August 16--Mohawk Industries has realigned its Mohawk residential and commercial flooring businesses into two strategic business units (SBUs) designed to enhance operations and customer service.

CPI Up 0.5% in July

Washington, DC, August 16--The consumer prices index rose 0.5% in July, according to the Labor Department. The core index, which excludes food and energy increased 0.2%.

Brazilian Exhibitors Generate $22 Million at Cover

Alexandria, VA, August 16--The Brazilian tile and stone exhibitors at Coverings 2005 reported over US$22 million in revenue (5.5 million square meters of ceramic tile) resulting from business generated at the show.

Propex Fabrics Reports 2Q Results

Austell, GA, August 16--Propex Fabrics reported total net revenue that increased $10.3 million, or 6.5%, from $157.8 million in the second quarter of 2004 to $168.1 million in the three months ended June 30, 2005.

Housing Starts Slip 0.1% in July

Washington, DC, August 16--Housing starts fell 0.1 percent in July from a four month high in June, according to the Commerce Department.
