TCNA Members Collaborate to Create Award

Clemson, SC, May 16--Four Tile Council of North America (TCNA) members and an Ohio master craftsman contributed time and materials to create a one-of-a-kind commemorative Tile Person of the Year award. TCNA member, Brigid O’Connor of Artfind Tile designed the award using a laser engraved Summitville Strata 6 x 6 tile surrounded by metal tiles donated by TCNA member Metaphor Bronze. Ms. O’Connor installed the tiles in thinset and grout from TCNA member Laticrete International on TCNA member Custom Building Products’ EasyBoard backerboard. Timberwood Products of Wooster, Ohio created a custom built walnut frame with maple inlay from Ohio grown hardwoods. "I designed this award using one of Summitville’s most successful lines, accented in a new member’s tile to symbolize the collaboration of large and small tile manufacturers, an idea championed by Peter Johnson, Jr.," said Ms. O’Connor. "The design conveys durability and strength – qualities of Summitville and the Tile Council." Eric Astrachan, executive director of the Tile Council of North America added, "Mr. Johnson was instrumental in creating the Art/Studio membership category allowing ceramic tile artisans to join, and benefit from, our association. This award is uniquely appropriate for this remarkable individual." This commemorative award was presented to Peter C. Johnson, Jr. at an international press conference and awards ceremony announcing the 2005 TCNA Tile Person of the Year.
