Shaw Earns WRAP For Second Consecutive Year

Dalton, GA, April 13, 2007--For the second consecutive year, Shaw Industries, Inc. has been recognized by the Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP).  The WRAP award has been administered by the California Integrated Waste Management Board for the past 14 years as a means to publicly promote businesses locally and statewide that implement environmental best practices for successful reduction of waste disposal in landfills.

The WRAP designation was bestowed upon Shaw’s four facilities in California that service the Tuftex and Designweave brands.  In 2005, Shaw diverted over 5,000,000 pounds of recyclables from disposal to landfill, resulting in significant savings through waste reduction, reuse and reduced landfill costs.  By the end of 2006, these carpet manufacturing facilities reduced landfill waste by an additional 56%.  Shaw is also employing a wet lint capture at Plant WG and is helping to pioneer this form of waste capturing technology.

“This recognition is a testament to Shaw’s commitment to responsible environmental practices, specifically in the area of waste reduction,” said Jim Cusick, director of manufacturing.  “With an innovative environmental mindset, Shaw is designing products and manufacturing processes that allow our carpet to be remade again and again into more carpet.  Cradle to Cradle design decreases the need for virgin raw materials and prevents our products from being sent to the landfill at the end of their useful lives.”

“By finding alternatives to recycle industrial waste material, the Shaw plants have significantly reduced disposal and transportation costs.  These waste reduction efforts have helped reduce California’s municipal waste, material sent to landfill and environmental emissions” said Bill Woyshner, environmental manager.

“Designweave is proud to be part of the Shaw team that has been honored with its second consecutive WRAP award,” said Steve DeCarlo, vice president of sales for Designweave.  “Designweave's growth in manufacturing continues to support the California economy, but as importantly, our initiative driven progress towards sustainability continues to drive reduction of waste.”

The Shaw Environmental System is an Environmental Management System, a set of processes and practices designed to reduce environmental impacts and increase operating efficiency within manufacturing plants.  The Shaw Environmental System is based on ISO 14001 and is modified to address the specific environmental considerations relevant to the carpet manufacturing industry.
