Armstrong Cutting Jobs at Tennessee Wood Plant

Oneida, TN, May 28, 2008--Armstrong Hardwood Flooring Co. will lay off 113 workers at the end of May at its Scott County, Tenn. plant, according to Knoxvillebiz.com.

Lower product demand because of the housing market slump and a sluggish economy have forced the company to restructure its operations in Oneida, company spokeswoman Meg Graham said Tuesday.

A third shift that the company added about a year ago when demand was still high will be eliminated. Two day-shift operations at the plant will continue, but the night shift will be eliminated Friday, Graham said.

Scott County Mayor Ricky A. Keeton told the newspaper that the company notified county officials a few weeks ago that the layoffs were coming.

"They are a national producer of hardwood flooring, and with the economy and home sales slowing down, it just caught them in a pinch," Keeton said.
