Wisconsin Retailer Gets Surprise Call

Fond du Lac, WI, July 14--When the Bush-Cheney campaign and the trailing media throng rolls into town today, they will eat and walk all over some of the best Fond du Lac has to offer, according to the Fond du Lac Reporter. Twohig Flooring America was contacted Sunday about making a 12-by-12-foot rug with a giant “W” on it for President George W. Bush’s visit this afternoon to Mid-States Aluminum. A few hours earlier, on Saturday night, Linstrom’s Catering in Fond du Lac received a call about providing a buffet meal and about 100 box lunches for members of the campaign staff and the media. It is not clear if the purchase were a direct part of the president’s economic plan, but the visit is putting some cash into at least two local businesses. The rug definitely wasn’t something in stock. The gray-and-black rug was specially made with a huge “W” on it and the words “The President” below. Brian and Kevin Twohig were contacted Sunday by the Bush-Cheney campaign, which asked them to create a rug for the president to stand on during his appearance today at Mid-States Aluminum Corp. "Of course, we can’t say no,” Brian Twohig said about being contacted by the campaign. “It’s really unique.” The Twohigs started working first thing Monday morning on the 12-by-12-foot rug and continued into the night. They were at it again Tuesday to put the final touches on the rug and size it properly. Brian Twohig, who co-owns the shop with his brother, said the president’s advance team was in their store Monday selecting the colors. They even went on the Twohig computers to map out a design. “They really had it set up well,” he said. He said they’ve been custom-building rugs for a long time and have all the techniques down. They can cut in logos, lettering and even flowers into carpeting. One of the best parts of the process was that the Bush-Cheney team loved the finished product, Brian Twohig said. “They were just in awe. It’s pretty neat,” he said. Although Brian and Kevin probably won’t be able to make it to the president’s speech — a big sale is keeping them busy in the store — they’ll have some of their employees in attendance.
