What’ve You Done for your Mother Lately?

Dalton, GA, February 2, 2006—That’s the question surrounding all the buzz for the 2006 Chandler Awards, Patcraft Commercial Carpet’s national competition for architectural design and creative excellence. The Call for Entries went out the first of 2006 with an entry deadline for March 15, 2006. Any commercial design project completed between April 2005 and March 2006 is eligible. Entrants may also qualify via the Internet at chandlerawards.com. The 2006 iteration of the competition marks its fifth year with a steadily growing profile throughout the design community. The Chandler Awards Best in Show and two Excellence in Design winners will receive $2,500 and $500 respectively. A representative for each firm also receives a trip to NEOCON in Chicago for the awards presentation, as well as recognition in ads appearing in Interior Design and IIDA Perspective magazines, as well as at patcraft.com. The theme: “Make Your Mother Proud,” provides a tongue-in-cheek motivational premise playing off of the classic “doting mom” back home, diligently filling scrapbooks—and maybe not completely understanding exactly what commercial designers and architects actually do. “We felt it was a fun, clever approach with near-universal appeal,” says Robin Thompson, vice president of marketing. “Something we all can identify with at some level. Clearly, doing great creative work is a challenging and rewarding endeavor. Making mom—and dad—proud is no small part of that ‘reward matrix’.” The Chandlers have historically been reviewed by a stellar panel of architectural and design professionals from throughout the U.S., and 2006 will be no exception. Judges include: Edward Cave III, president of Veenandaal Cave & Associates, Jennifer Latto, project manager with Margulies & Associates and Nicolette Brandstedt, resource librarian with Gensler (Chicago). “We continue to be impressed and gratified with the quantity and quality of our entrants,” says Thompson. “Our criteria has evolved somewhat over the years to emphasize overall design quality as well as creativity, and our entries have reflected that transition.” The competition’s name recognizes the Chandler family’s founding of the company more than a half-century ago.
