New York, NY, January 30, 2007--Chain store sales for the week ended January 27 rose 4.9% from the year-ago period, according to a survey released Tuesday by International Council of Shopping Centers Inc. and UBS Securities LLC.
On a week-over-week basis, sales slipped 0.9%.
"Sales were chilled by very cold winter weather and snow across more than half the country this past week," said Michael Niemira, ICSC's chief economist. Niemira still expects sales to increase by about 3% percent for January, citing tough year-ago comparisons.
