USGBC:10 Principles for Sustainable Development
Washington, DC, March 20, 2006--The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), will present its “Ten Principles for Sustainable Development” in New Orleans at a luncheon Monday, March 20. at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. Entitled “The New Orleans Principles: Celebrating the Rich History of New Orleans Through Commitment to a Sustainable Future,” the principles were established by over 160 design and construction specialists, along with area community leaders, at a charrette on Gulf Coast Reconstruction held November 9-11, 2005, at the annual Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Atlanta. The luncheon will bring together leading representatives in urban planning, architecture, real estate, and local government. After presenting its principles for sustainable development, USGBC will hold a brief press conference. The effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have been felt all over the country. These principles are the first in a series of four, providing recommendations aimed at preserving and enhancing the area’s environmental, cultural and economic resources while ushering it into the 21st century as a leading player in the global economy. As the rebuilding of New Orleans begins to boom, this is a critical time for advocating design and development principles that will foster community involvement in the planning process, healthy, livable, safe and secure neighborhoods, a diverse local economy and a responsible relationship with the area’s ecology.
