USGBC Names Natural Talent Design Awards Winners

Washington, DC, November 30, 2006--The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) concluded its fourth annual national design competition at Greenbuild, the annual conference and trade show, two weeks ago in Denver, Colorado. Because of the tremendous quality of all entries and consistent attention to a variety of sustainable systems and strategies, the judges felt strongly that there needed to be a three-way tie for first place, as well as one honorable mention. The prizes were awarded as follows: USGBC National Capitol Region Chapter: temporary school modules - Casey Frazier- Perkins Eastman Architects - Matthew Hogan- Sutton-Yantis Associates Architects - Sean Wheeler- Walter Parks Architects - Amy Vetal- Jacobs Architectural/Engineering USGBC New York Chapter: nature center - Kevin Morin- Mancini Duffy - Dianna Pozdniakov- Moed de Armas & Shannon USGBC North Carolina Triangle Chapter: Habitat for Humanity house - Frank Giordano- North Carolina State University - Andrew Darab- North Carolina State University - KC Kurtz- North Carolina State University - Eric Jabaley- North Carolina State University - Susan Ungerleider- North Carolina State University Honorable Mention: USGBC Colorado Chapter: sustainable campus - Elicia Ratajczyk- Colorado University- Denver - Michael Florio- Colorado University- Denver - Melissa Mabe Sabanosh- Colorado University- Denver - Gary Taipalus- Colorado University-Denver The 2006 expert panel of judges consisted of Bill Valentine, HOK; Gail Lindsey, Design Harmony; Gail Vittori, Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems; Lance Hosey, William McDonough + Partners; and Jana McKenzie, EDAW. Building Green donated one year of access to their Building Green Suite for all entrants, and HOK sponsored the monetary awards. Growing from the enormous success seen in the 2006 competition, nineteen local groups have created local programs and are hosting their own local competitions. These groups include: Northern California, National Capital Region, North Carolina Triangle, Cincinnati, Delaware Valley, New York City, Colorado, Kansas City, South Florida, Wisconsin, Cascadia, Mississippi Headwaters, Atlanta, Chicago, Western Michigan, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Arkansas and Indiana. Local winners will again be sponsored to Greenbuild 2007 in Los Angeles in October.
