U.S. Seeking Comments on Lacey Act

Washington, DC, March 2, 2011 -- The federal government is accepting comments on the implementation of revisions to the Lacey Act, which, among other things, attempts to prevent illegally harvested hardwood from entering the country.

As of Dec. 15, 2008 it became illegal to import certain plants and plant products without an import declaration.

The declaration must contain the scientific name of the plant, value of the importation, quantity of the plant, and name of the country from which the plant was harvested.

Enforcement of the declaration requirement is currently being phased in.

Comments are being accepted through April 14.
