Universal’s Bio-Based Backing Continues to Wow the

Dalton, GA, November 21, 2005--BioCel, the award-winning, environmentally-sensitive polyurethane backing for carpets and artificial turf, continues to win both accolades from the sustainable design community and market acceptance from manufacturers. Developed by Dalton, Georgia based Universal Textile Technologies, BioCel replaces a portion of the petroleum-based polymers in polyurethane with recycled and sustainable components, resulting in a backing that is 60-70% green by weight. BioCel contains Celceram, a highly refined recovered form of the mineral lignite, combined with polymers containing soybean oil, a renewable resource. In its first year, BioCel has become a primary specified backing for the majority of commercial carpet and synthetic turf manufacturers. First introduced at the 2004 NeoCon World's Trade Fair in Chicago, BioCel won the Grand Prize for Environmental Initiatives presented by Buildings Magazine. BioCel qualifies for LEED point credit for rapidly renewable materials and can be specified for GSA use. It is available in all polyurethane cushion and non-cushioned backing manufactured by Universal. According to Universal Textile Technologies president Tom Peeples, "Universal is committed to the principles of sustainable development. With BioCel, we have a green product with improved performance, and no increase in cost. We're extremely proud of the advances BioCel brings to sustainable technology." Universal Textile Technologies supplies the carpet industry with multiple backing systems, including polyurethane high performance backings manufactured for use in such high traffic commercial applications as the corporate, healthcare, and education markets.
