Unilin Takes Infringement Action in Australia
Wielsbeke, Belgium, November 23, 2005--On November 18, 2005, Unilin issued proceedings against Shun Li De, an Australian importer and reseller of Chinese laminate. Unilin contends that Shun Li De infringes and has infringed Unilin’s Australian patent AU 713 628 by importing and selling flooring panels that fall into the scope of the above-mentioned patent. Recently, Unilin came to a settlement agreement with six other Australian importers and distributors concerning their past sales of unlicensed Asian laminate flooring in Australia. By the agreements, the past infringement was settled and these companies agreed to cease importation and distribution of the alleged infringing products. As Shun Li De was not willing to cooperate in finding an out of court solution, Unilin had no other option than to start the present lawsuit. Unilin is in the business of developing, manufacturing and selling laminate flooring panels with glueless locking systems, which are sold under the brand Quick•Step. In 1997 Unilin introduced its pioneering Uniclic system, which soon became the reference for glueless flooring joints. This technology is protected by worldwide patents, including Australian patent AU 713 628. Unilin will continue to monitor the Australian market closely and take all measures necessary to protect its intellectual property rights.
