Unemployment Rate Falls to 50-Year Low

Washington, DC, October 4, 2019--The unemployment rate declined to 3.5% in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The last time the rate was this low was in December 1969, when it also was 3.5%.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 136,000. 

Employment in health care and in professional and business services continued to trend up.  

Over the month, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 275,000 to 5.8 million.
