UK Vinyl Recycling Program Nets 70 Tons

London, England, March 2, 2009--A vinyl flooring recycling program in the UK has yielded around 70 tons of material in its first year of operation, according to Axion Consulting, which is seeking more participation by waste transfer stations.

Jane Gardner, Axion’s project leader said: “The amount of material already processed clearly demonstrates how the positive commitment from collectors, waste transfer stations and manufacturers has helped to increase recycling opportunities, divert waste from landfill and save on disposal costs.”

She said the program fits in very well with the construction industry’s drive to divert waste from landfill. Although progress in the first year has been “tremendous”, Axion said it wants to boost floor recycling further by increasing the number of drop-off points.

There are currently more than 100 collection sites and 18 drop-off points around the country. Material is processed at three recycling centers run by Polyflor in Manchester, Tarkett in Kent and Altro in Letchworth.

Axion Consulting, part of the Axion Recycling group, has also launched a new process equipment sales and design service for the plastics recycling industry. The service aims to help companies on a wide range of difficult waste challenges in the plastics sector, Axion said.
