UK Sees Big Jump in Carpet Recycling
London, England, July 14, 2011 -- The amount of carpet waste diverted from landfill rose by 60% in 2010 compared to the previous year's figures, according to trade group Carpet Recycling UK.
Approximately 42,000 tons of carpet waste were diverted in 2010 and the industry now believes it is on track to achieve its 25% landfill diversion target by 2015, Carpet Recycling said.
Currently only 10% in total of carpet waste is being recycled or recovered.
On-going research is being conducted into innovative outlets and end markets for recycled carpet waste with 50 small-scale development trials last year.
Targets for 2011 include diverting 50,000 tons (12%) from landfill and increasing recycling outlets to 40 across the UK.
