UK Recycling Firm Takes All Carpet Types

London, England, Nov. 5, 2010 -- Leeds-based specialist recycling company 4Recycling Ltd has launched a new service to increase collection and recycling of waste carpet.

The firm, which specialises in the recycling of industry by-products, can accept mixed loads of any type of wool-rich or synthetic waste carpet. Material is identified, segregated and processed at its Leeds site before being sent for recycling.

Initial volumes of around 25,000 tons within a year could rise to some 75,000 tons annually once further processing centers are opened throughout the UK.

Wool-rich material is to be shredded and composted for re-use as a growing medium for ‘contained’ environments, such as plant pots or grow-bags.

Synthetic carpet waste will be shredded and commonly used for equestrian surfaces or in sound-proofing and underlayment applications.

According to Paul Gilbert, Director of 4Recycling, there is growing demand for carpet recycling facilities due to general increased environmental awareness, coupled with rising landfill disposal costs.

Working across the whole supply chain, from distributors and fitting contractors to waste transfer stations, 4Recycling organizes collection services for bulk carpet waste. Additional reprocessing sites are planned in South Wales, the South West and Northumberland along with transport hubs in Sheffield, Kent, Northern Ireland and two sites in the North West.

4Recycling is looking for partners to develop transport hubs in London, the Midlands and Scotland.
