UK Flooring Company Fined for River Contamination

London, England, November 16--A company making laminated flooring has been fined 60,000 pounds for polluting a tributary of the River Dee, according to the Western Mail. Kronospan pleaded guilty to four charges relating to the discharge of fuel oil from its Chirk plant into the Afon Bradley in July 2003. Traces of fuel oil were found following routine monitoring of the River Dee, which is a major source of drinking water. A portable water abstraction at Twll, Bangor- on-Dee, was closed for the day by Dee Valley Water as a precaution to prevent contamination of the water supply following the leak. Wrexham Magistrates' Court also ordered Kronospan to pay pounds 7,315 costs to the Environment Agency Wales, which brought the prosecution.
