Orange, TX, December 4, 2006--One of Orange’s most trusted carpet and flooring businesses will be closing its doors soon as the owners have decided to retire, according to the Orange Leader.
David and Karen Goode, owners of the Orange Carpet and Sleep Shop, have made the decision to retire after running the business for eight years.
“We’re burnt out,” said Karen Goode laughing. “We want to get back up to where our kids and grandkids live before they get too big.”
The Goodes took over Orange Carpet and Sleep Shop in 1998, when her father, James Bolding, decided to retire after running the business for 22 years.
At that time, David and Karen resided in the Longview, Texas area, which is where they plan to return as soon as possible.
Bolding started the business from the family garage and eventually opened the first location on Border Street in downtown Orange.
Goode said she is unsure when the business will officially close, but she said the business is already liquidating most everything in the shop.
“We’re hoping to sell the business instead of just close it,” she said. “But if we can’t sell it, then we will just continue to sell our merchandise and eventually close the doors.”
Hurricane Rita has been both a burden and a boon for the Goodes. The store sustained heavy damage but quickly reopened to meet the needs of the community.
“The showroom took a hard hit from the storm,” Goode said. “We worked nearly a month without electricity and phones, but we had people coming in through the back door to buy carpet and flooring material just days after the storm. It has been non stop for us ever since, until a couple of months.”
David and Karen Goode have been married for nearly 37 years and have two sons, both of whom operate an air conditioning and refrigeration business together.
Since the business appears to have “leveled off” according to Goode, she said the decision to retire really has not been that difficult to make.
“We’ve made a lot of good friends while we’ve been here,” she said. “We really are going to miss everybody, but we’re tired. David needs a break, and I could use one too.”
Orange Carpet and Sleep Shop sells carpeting, laminate, vinyl and ceramic tile flooring, as well as mattresses and other sleep related items.
