Sustainability Front and Center on Earth Day

New York, NY, April 22, 2011 -- Friday is Earth Day, the most well known celebration by the environmental movement to raise public awareness about sustainability issues.

This year's event is being called "A Billion Acts of Green," encouraging people to observe Earth Day by pledging online at act.earthday.org or do something small but sustainable in their own lives, such as switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs or reduce the use of pesticides in their own gardens.

"Millions of people doing small, individual acts can add up to real change," said Chad Chitwood, a spokesman for the umbrella group coordinating efforts.

There will be rallies and other events across the U.S. The holiday began here but has spread to 192 countries.

Floorcovering firms have been among the leaders in sustainability in the manufacturing community, and many of them are marking the day with their own events.
