Steve Skonie, Veteran of Flooring Industry, Dies

Charlotte, NC, July 11, 2017-Steve Skonie, 65, flooring industry veteran, passed away on June 28, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. 

Skonie started his life-long career in the flooring business as an assistant buyer to Len Donlin at Montgomery Ward in Chicago. He was then hired by Rick Meyer, Carpetland USA as executive vice president/buyer over the 75-store chain. After eight years there, he joined Carpet Wholesalers as vice president. His last stop in Chicago was vice president/buyer at the department store chain Polk Brothers headquartered in Melrose Park, Illinois.

From there, he joined Mohawk Industries and moved to Calhoun, Georgia. He spent more than 20 years with Mohawk as director-home centers in the area rug department. He spent several years in Calhoun and was then transferred to Charlotte, North Carolina working out of Mohawk’s Mooresville, North Carolina office. He retired from Mohawk in 2015.

He is survived by his wife, Kitt Brown Skonie, and his daughters, Natalie O’Donnell and Alexandra Bernardi-Skonie.
