Solutia Closes South Carolina Nylon Plant
Greenwood, SC, Nov. 17, 2008--Solutia has laid off more than 300 employees at its Greenwood nylon production site, according to the Index-Journal newspaper.
The report said that Solutia public relations representative Missy Hammond confirmed the shut down Monday morning.
“We have been taking steps since August to align our production and inventory with global demands,” Hammond told the newspaper. “You and I both see the news every day, and we know this is a changing economy. What we are seeing, in the past six weeks, is an unprecedented drop in demand throughout our entire nylon business.
“We had to take the necessary steps to ensure our assets are balanced in relation to demand. At this point, this has resulted in a number of layoffs there in Greenwood.”
The newpaper said that one of Solutia's plants on the site was closed.
