Shaw's Aiken, SC Plant Expansion Nears Completion

Aiken, SC, April 8, 2024-"Shaw Industries Group Inc.’s Plant 78 near Aiken is the site of a $500-million expansion project that represents the largest capital investment in the company’s history,” according to the Aiken Standard.

Tim Baucom, CEO and president of Shaw told FloorDaily, "We are making this investment to generate more energy and flexiblity in our carpet business. This expanded facility will enable us to produce both nylon and PET in natural and solution-dyed formats as the consumer demands them."

Aiken Standard continues, “The plan to significantly increase the facility’s size was announced in 2021, and the project is ‘getting really close’ to being completed, said Plant 78’s manager, John Riley, on April 5.

“Prior to the start of the project, the facility covered 480,000 square feet and stood on an approximately 40-acre tract. Around 620 people worked there.

“As a result of the expansion, ‘we’ve more than doubled our square footage and we’re up to 1.02 million square feet under roof,’ Riley said.

“Shaw Industries also acquired additional land to increase the size of the plant’s property to 127 acres.

“‘We will have 916 people [working at the facility] when we mature,’ Riley said. ‘We actually will hire above that a little bit because you know how things are with attrition. We’ll be adding about 300 good jobs to the community.’

“The plant’s production capacity following the expansion will be 2.6 million to three million pounds of yarn per week, up from approximately 1.4 million per week before the project began.”
