Shaw Wins GSA Evergreen Award

Dalton, GA, December 30, 2005--Shaw Industries’ Commercial Division received the 2005 GSA Evergreen Award in the furnishings category. The award was presented at the Quality Partnership Council meeting on December 8, 2005. The five categories considered in evaluating nominees are: • Waste Prevention • Recycling • Affirmative Procurement • Environmental Preferability • Model Facility ”Shaw is delighted to receive this nationally recognized award from GSA that reinforces our commitment to environmental leadership. When paired with the 2003 Presidential Green Chemistry Award from the EPA, these awards represent a strong endorsement from our valued government sector customers,” said Hal Long, executive vp of Shaw’s Commercial Division. Shaw’s environmental initiatives provide significant contributions in all five categories considered under the GSA Evergreen Award. Most significantly, its EcoWorx carpet tile backing has been optimized through the MBDC protocol, ensuring its safety for human health and the environment. As a cradle-to-cradle product, EcoWorx can be recycled in a continuous loop, back into its original state. “As Shaw extends the EcoWorx technology platform into cradle-to-cradle broadloom carpet, we also continue development of transitional technologies allowing the company to take existing products that were never designed for recycling in environmentally preferable directions, such as carpet waste gasification. These strategies provide an important bridge to future sustainable redesign of all carpet types produced by Shaw,” said Steve Bradfield, corporate director of environmental affairs for Shaw Industries.
