Shaw to Convert Shuttered Yarn Plant to Hardwood F

Dalton, GA, March 7, 2006--Shaw Industries plans to spend $20 million to convert a yarn plant it closed three years ago in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee, into a hardwood flooring factory, according to the Tennessean. Current plans call for the plant to open this summer. The newspaper said the Shaw officials expect to reopen the Marion County plant with 90 employees in July. According to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, Shaw has purchased land adjacent to the former yarn plant and could eventually employ as many as 200 people there. The plant employed 390 workers when it closed in August 2003. "The reopening of the South Pittsburgh facility will position Shaw as a true manufacturer and distributor of hardwood flooring products," said Jeff Williams, Shaw's director of hard surface manufacturing. The reopened plant will be Shaw's first foray into making hardwood flooring. The company has sold flooring for some time; it bought the products through a third party, Shaw spokesman Scott Sandlin said. The yarn plant was closed due to the reduced demand for spun nylon yarn.
