Shaw to Close Wool Plant

Dalton, GA, December 23--Shaw Industries is closing its wool carpet plant in Dallas, Georgia, eliminating 122 jobs, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The newspaper quoted Julius Shaw, executive vice president at Shaw as saying that the company has found new positions within the company for more than 100 of those employees. Most of the Dallas employees will move to jobs at Shaw's plant in Cartersville during the next 60 days, he said. Shaw took over the plant in 1987, but in the years since, wool carpet has fallen out of fashion, replaced largely by nylon and other synthetic carpets. Shaw, based in Dalton, has been a part of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate since 2002.
