Shaw Cutting Workforce at Tennessee Wood Plant
South Pittsburg, TN, March 10, 2009--Shaw Industries said it will reduce manufacturing volume at its hardwood facility in South Pittsburg because of lower demand caused by weaker market conditions.
This plant, which was once a Shaw Yarn plant, was converted in 2006 to become Shaw's first engineered hardwood plant. At that time, the plant was retooled with the latest technology for this type of product. Shaw manufactures its Epic hardwood products at this facility - an engineered product that yields more square footage of flooring and yet uses fewer trees than most other hardwood flooring on the market today
The reduction will reportedly affect about half the workforce at the plant.
Shaw said it will add employees as demand returns and that it is optimistic about the long term success of its hardwood business.
Shaw said it will try to find jobs elsewhere in the company for displaced workers.
