Shaw Combining Plants in Fitzgerald, Report Says

Fitzgerald, GA, May 15, 2008--Shaw will reportedly combine  plants in Fitzgerald rather than close them down.

According to a television report, Shaw initially planned to shut down two Fitzgerald plants that produce carpet yarn.

But now the company will combine those two facilities with a small out-of-state plant in the larger Fitzgerald plant.

As a result, there will apparently be no job losses in Fitzgerald, which could have been more than 400.

"We were able to negotiate out a memorandum of understanding with them they're going to use plant eight and combine the other two yarn plants here together with one from out of state and of course that will save over 400 employees," Fitzgerald Mayor Gerald H. Thompson told the station.

Shaw was reportedly given a number of incentives to keep the jobs in south Georgia, including tax credits, and reduced utility rates.
