Shaw Closing Plants in Calhoun, Valdosta Georgia

Dalton, GA,  March 24, 2009 –Shaw Industries will close a spun yarn facility in Calhoun, Ga., and a filament yarn facility in Valdosta, Ga. due to business conditions.

"The housing sector is experiencing unprecedented difficulties which impacts consumer demand in many
categories, including carpet and other flooring products," the company said in a news release.

"Reduced demand necessitates that Shaw adjust and balance its production with changing customer preferences."

About 600 employees will be affected and the company said it will try to place employees in other Shaw plants as openings become available.

Shaw continues to employ about 18,000 people across the state and many more across the country. The company said it remains confident about the future of the carpet business for the long term.
