Shaw Closing Georgia Spun Yarn Plant

Dalton, GA, April 13, 2011 -- Shaw Industries Group will close a spun yarn plant in Chatsworth, Ga. known as Plant 82.

The company said that customer preference has moved away from staple yarn systems in favor of carpet manufactured with filament yarn, which has led to the decision to close the plant.

Shaw said it is confident that during the next 90 days that it will be able to offer positions to all hourly employees at the plant who want to remain with the company at other locations.

Shaw said it is also partnering with the Georgia Department of Labor’s Rapid Response Team to provide on-site, one-on-one sessions to counsel associates, explain benefits, and provide out-placement and retraining.

Dixie Yarns built the plant in 1967 or 1968. Armstrong E&B purchased the plant in 1985, and it was part of Shaw's acquisition of E&B in 1990.
