Shaw Closing Carpet Plant in Fitzgerald, Georgia

Fitzgerald, GA, September 7, 2007-- Shaw Industries, the largest employer in Ben Hill County, is closing its facility in Fitzgerald, displacing 500 workers.

The company said the reason for the plant closing is related to the current decline in the housing market, resulting in a decline in carpet sales.

The plant, which spins the nylon, opened in Fitzgerald in1983. A Shaw plant in Tifton closed its doors in August of last year.

Shaw is a full-service flooring company with more than $5 billion in annual sales and approximately 30,000 employees.
