Senate Considers National Housing Emergency Act

Charlotte, NC, January 20, 2026-"The National Housing Emergency Act, introduced in the Senate on Thursday, is another aim to address the housing affordability crisis,” reports Truist.

“It calls on President Trump to declare a national housing emergency and use the Defense Production Act as a means to increase domestic production of building materials like lumber and steel. The aim is to drive construction of around four million new housing units. The bill would also compel state and local governments to loosen their zoning regulations by rewarding ‘pro-growth’ communities with federal block grants. The legislation aligns with growing national efforts to expand housing supply.
