Sears Canada Announces First Six Locations for Off

Toronto, Ontario, June 25--Sears Canada Inc. today announced the first six locations for two of its off-mall specialty store formats--Appliances & Mattresses and Coverings. All six locations are based in Ontario. Five locations will open in Fall 2004 and one location (Scarborough) will open in Spring 2005. The new stores will create approximately 100 retail jobs and 200 construction jobs in the province. Sears will open four 12,000 square foot Sears Appliances & Mattresses stores which will be located in Stoney Creek (Queen Elizabeth Way and Lewis Road), Burlington (Guelph Line and Davidson Court), Scarborough (Morningside and Hwy 401), and Oshawa (Ritson and Taunton Road). Additionally, Sears will open two 10,500 square foot Sears Coverings stores which will be located in St. Catharines (Hwy 406 and Glendale) and Mississauga (Matheson and Mavis). "We are currently the number one retailer of major appliances, window coverings and mattress sets," said Mark A. Cohen, Chairman and CEO, Sears Canada. "As the most extensive multi-channel retailer in the country, Sears is in virtually every market. However, with the absence of new shopping mall growth, our new specialty format store strategy will bring our key product categories and decor solutions to a growing customer segment who shop in conveniently located Power Centres on a regular basis," said Cohen. "This investment is built on the solid foundation of our unique assets including exceptional customer service, broad selection of quality merchandise, satisfaction guaranteed and trust." Sears plans to open 30 new format stores, including Sears Wellness stores, by the end of 2005. They will be primarily located in power centres and high traffic strip malls. The Sears Appliances & Mattresses stores and Sears Coverings stores will include a catalogue merchandise pick-up location. Sears Canada, the retailer with the most extensive multi-channel network in the country, began serving customers in 1953. The company has 48,000 associates and, in an independent consumer survey, ranks first in trust, respect, and quality products and services. There is a Sears location within a 10-minute drive of 93% of Canadians, and Sears is dedicated to providing them with quality merchandise and exceptional service coast to coast through its 122 department stores, 47 Sears Home stores, over 2,200 catalogue merchandise pick-up locations, 148 dealer stores, 12 outlet stores, 51 floor covering centres, 110 Sears Travel offices and a nationwide home maintenance, repair, and installation network. The company also publishes Canada's most extensive general merchandise catalogue and offers shopping online at www.sears.ca.
