Retailer’s Logo a School Project

Tracy, CA, March 24, 2006--The task to design a business logo is usually left to advertising professionals, but owners of a local flooring company decided to give a Tracy High School student a shot instead. “I was looking at companies to design a logo, and someone said, ‘Put it out to the high school kids,’” Tracy Flooring Inc., co-owner Victoria Rynberg said. “I thought it was a good idea.” After sifting through 30 entries, Rynberg said she and her husband, Jeffrey, chose a winner: a design by 17-year-old Caldean Biscocho. His caricature drawing of a carpet, plank of wood and two tiles was a great piece of work, Rynberg said. She said it best resembled herself, her husband and their twin daughters, Jessica and Megan. Biscocho was taken by surprise with the news of his winning work. “It was a huge shock. We have so many talented kids that I didn’t expect this,” he said. An avid artist, Biscocho said he also competed this year as the courtroom artist for Tracy High’s mock trial team. When the idea to ask local high school students presented itself, Rynberg said she contacted both high schools. She said Tracy High art teacher Tom Coupe quickly took her up on the idea. “I thought it was a great idea,” Coupe said. “The closest they had to (logo design) was to design a cereal box.” The teacher presented the contest as a class project to his introductory and intermediate students. “I gave them about three weeks to do it. I told them how to use the logo, and they came up with the ideas. “I think it’s great to let kids interact with the businesses in Tracy. It helps the community come in with the high schools and bond a little more.” Out of 160 students, Coupe said he chose about 30 to be submitted to the company owners. Finishing a close second and third in the contest were Patrick Hamel, 17, with his design of a carpet superhero, and Jessica Ocegueda, 16, who drew a man who rode on a carpet. All three winners were from Coupe’s Introduction to Art class. “I was excited,” Hamel said. “I didn’t expect to win anything. I just did it as an assignment for class.” Ocegueda said her love for drawing and painting made the project fun. Each winner was given gift cards of varying denominations. The owners of Tracy Flooring said they plan to use the winning logo on all their advertising, including business cards, stationary and publicity banners.
