Retail Sales Increase Less Than Expected

Washington, DC, Sept. 13, 2013 -- Retail sales in the U.S. rose less than expected in August, according to the Commerce Department.

The 0.2% increase was the smallest in four months, although the July figure was revised higher to 0.4%.

Economists were looking for a 0.5% advance.

Eight of 13 major categories showed increased sales last month, although purchases of building materials fell.

Cars and light trucks sold at the fastest annualized rate since November 2007.
