Realtors Help Rebuild New Orleans

Washington, D.C., September 8, 2006--A New Orleans family soon will have a new place to call home as the National Association of Realtors teamed with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity today to raise the walls on a house at 2131 Mazant Street. The home on Mazant Street, in the Musicians’ Village, will be the first home built in New Orleans as part of the REALTOR-Habitat Partnership for Gulf Coast Recovery program, in which each of the nation’s 54 state and territorial realtor associations are sponsoring and building a new home in the Gulf Coast region. “Realtors care about our communities and are dedicated to helping families find a place to call home,” said Thomas M. Stevens, NAR president and senior vice president of NRT Inc., from Vienna, Va. “We hope this home makes a real difference to a New Orleans family and offers a fresh start after having lost so much in the storm.” The house on Mazant Street will be dedicated in November when the Realtors convene in New Orleans during the annual Realtors Conference & Expo, November 10-13. During that week, some 30,000 Realtors will bring hands-on help to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast by cleaning up damaged neighborhoods, building new Habitat for Humanity homes, clearing and planting in City Park and bringing $34 million in needed revenue. Of the 54 homes being built by Realtors, 27 “homes in a box” will be constructed across the country and shipped to the storm affected area while the remaining half will be built on the ground in the Gulf Coast region. All 54 homes will be under construction through 2007.
