Pakistani Carpet Exports Increasing

Lahore, Pakistan, November 16--Carpet exports from Pakistan continue to make steady gains despite a difficult international market situation. Naeem Tahir Sheikh, a spokesman of carpet industry, said in a statement here on November 12 while quoting latest figures released by Ministry of Commerce, according to Pakistan Press International. He explained that this healthy trend in carpet exports, despite stiff competition from other countries, is a testimony to the quality and high craftsmanship of the carpets being made in Pakistan. In the past few years a lot of innovation in colour and design has taken place in Pakistan carpet industry in line with the changes in consumer taste and preferences abroad, he explained. Over the years Vegetable Dye and Hand Spun Wool carpets are being increasingly exported from Pakistan to meet the demand for organic products in the intentional market. "In the last couple of years departure of Afghan weavers gave a set back to the industry, but one healthy development is that Pakistani weavers have now begun making the kind of classical and traditional carpets which were once a hallmark of Afghan weavers", he explained. There are more employment opportunities for Pakistani weavers, he said. The situation has also improved due to determined action and efforts to tackle the problem of child labour as this improved the image of Pakistani carpets in the world market.
