Pakistan Carpet Exporters Hope to Regain Lost U.S.

Karachi, Pakistan, Mar. 11--Pakistan carpet exporters are hoping to recover lost market share in the US market following a cut in the duty on Pakistani hand knotted carpets by U.S. authorities. The U.S. is the industry's largest single market, according to Nisar Mir, vice chairman of the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association. He said the reduction in duty, of 2% to 2.5% would lower the price of Pakistani carpets in the U.S. market, and should help regain at least 5% to 6% of marketshare. Pakistan exported hand knotted carpets worth $90 million last year compared to $127 million in 2001, a decline of 41%.
