Pakistan Carpet Export Update

Lahore, Pakistan, Feb. 16--Pakistan exports hand-knotted carpets worth US$131.78 million during the first seven months of the current fiscal year against exports of US $122.898 million during the corresponding period of the previous year. A spokesman of carpet industry said here Friday that the increase in the carpet exports showed that Pakistani economy was recovering from the shock received in the wake of 9/11 and the world recession that followed. Quoting the figures obtained from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), he said that there has also been an increase in volume terms. During July 2003 - January 2004 Pakistan exported 2.486 square meters of carpets as compared to 2.390 million square meters in the corresponding period of 2002-2003. The rise in volume exports is estimated at 4.02%. Another healthy development is a rise in Average Unit Price, which has gone up from 51.42 to 53.01.
