Oregon Family Opens Retail Business

Newport, OR, Februbery 24--After 25 years experience installing flooring for other companies, Dave Weiss, together with his wife, Donna, and eldest son, Dave, decided it was time to put Dave's knowledge of the flooring business and installation expertise to work in a family-owned business, according to the Newport News-Times. Weiss Flooring, located on the hill at the Southwest corner of Bard Road and Highway 101, opened for business on February 1. "We've thought about opening our own business for many years," son David, a 1998 Taft High graduate, and 2003 Oregon State graduate, says. "The timing was finally right, and everything just seemed to come together." Father Dave had been installing carpet locally during the last 17 years, Donna had been working various jobs, and David had been busy getting his degree. By the end of last year, however, it looked as if three of the four family members would finally be able to get together and begin planning for a business of their own. Another son, Jeffry, a 2000 Taft High graduate, lives and works in Salem. The brand new Weiss Flooring showroom has dozens of samples of carpeting, laminate flooring, vinyl flooring and laminate counter tops. Well-known names in vinyl flooring include Mannington, Armstrong and Comco; laminate flooring names include Columbia Clic, Alloc and Wilsonart; carpet lines include Mohawk, Beaulieu and Shaw. And the back room is filled with room-size remnants that are sold at bargain prices. "We also carry Marmoleum cork and bamboo flooring. These are what we call the 'green line,' which are environmentally friendly, because they're harvested through renewable sources," David points out. "The cork flooring comes from the bark of a tree, which begins it regrowth almost immediately." With today's access to the Internet, Donna says many people like to view products on the different websites and then call to see if a certain product is available at Weiss Flooring. "Most of the name-brand flooring companies do have their own web page, and it's like having a giant flooring catalogue in your own home," Donna says. "We've been working with a woman who lives in Seattle and owns a home here in Lincoln City. She called and asked us to order a product she found on the Internet. Chances are we can track down most products people see there or in a magazine and then order them." Weiss Flooring is open from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Weiss's are also available by appointment Sunday and evenings. An official Grand Opening will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, with promotional sales that will include discounted carpet remnants and in-stock vinyl.
