Orders for Durable Goods Rose 2.9% in August

Washington, DC, September 25, 2025-New orders for manufactured durable goods in August, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $8.9 billion or 2.9% to $312.1 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This followed a 2.7% July decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.4%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 1.9%. Transportation equipment, also up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase, $8.1 billion or 7.9% to $110.2 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in August, down following eight consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.5 billion or 0.2% to $307.5 billion. This followed a 1.6% July increase. Transportation equipment, down following four consecutive monthly increases, led the decrease, $0.3 billion or 0.3% to $102.0 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in August, up thirteen of the last fourteen months, increased $9.6 billion or 0.7% to $1,479.0 billion. This followed a virtually unchanged July increase. Transportation equipment, up five of the last six months, led the increase, $8.2 billion or 0.9% to $919.1 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in August, down following ten consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.1 billion or virtually unchanged to $590.8 billion. This followed a 0.3% July increase. Transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $0.6 billion or 0.3% to $188.2 billion.
