Online Advertising Tops Newspapers in 2010

New York, NY, Dec. 21, 2010 -- U.S. advertisers for the first time spent more money online than in newspapers in 2010, according to a new report released Monday by digital tracking website eMarketer.

Advertisers spent $25.8 billion in online advertising this year, an increase of 13.9% compared with $22.78 billion in newspaper ads, a decline of 8.2%, according to eMarketer.

“Marketers are devoting bigger shares of their budgets to digital media as they see more customers shifting time toward the web,” eMarketer CEO Geoff Ramsey said.

The company estimated that newspaper advertising will slide 6% in 2011 to $21.4 billion in 2011.
