Oklahoma Tornado Causes Carpet Plant Layoffs

Bloomsburg, PA, May 14--A tornado in Oklahoma has forced layoffs at a carpet plant in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, in Columbia County. The Press Enterprise reports that an undisclosed number of workers at Magee Rieter will be laid off temporarily because of the damage suffered recently at a General Motors plant in Oklahoma City. A spokesman at the Bloomsburg plant says the GM Oklahoma City assembly plant makes more than 600 vehicles a day. Magee Rieter supplied the carpet for those vehicles, representing 15 percent of the business for the Bloomsburg plant. A spokesman says struggling car sales had already forced the company to trim some of its work force.
