New SBIC Officers Lead Formative Strategy Planning

Washington, DC, May 15, 2006--The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) has announced the election of its new executive committee. Along with Board members and guests their first order of business was to lead a strategic planning session and the first Board meeting of 2006. The upcoming Strategic Plan will be put into operation October 1, 2006. Meet SBIC’s 2006--2007 executive committee officers: chairman, Gregory L. Crawford, executive director, Cool Metal Roofing Coalition, American Iron and Steel Institute (www.recycle-steel.org) vice chairman, Leon Chatelain, president, Chatelain Architects (www.chatelainarchitects.com) secretary, Deane Evans, executive director, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Center for Architecture and Building Science Research (www.njit.edu), and treasurer, John Sullivan, Director, Federal Infrastructure Markets, Portland Cement Association (www.cement.org). At-Large Positions are now held by: Judy Fosdick, president, Tierra Concrete Homes (www.tierraconcretehomes.com) Dona Stankus, building programs manager, North Carolina Solar Center (www.ncsc.ncsu.edu), and Tom Newton, manager, advertising and promotions, CertainTeed Corporation (www.certainteed.com) SBIC recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and has seen many changes over the years in the fields of energy efficiency, renewables, glazing, green products, indoor air quality, durability, safety and all the other features of high performance buildings. During the Council’s recent strategy session chairman Greg Crawford observed, "The landscape for sustainable building design and construction has become increasingly dynamic. There are exciting new ideas and approaches that will ultimately stimulate broader and quicker attainment of our common environmental goals." To that end, he and other newly seated officers, vice chairman Leon Chatelain and secretary Deane Evans led the SBIC Board and selected members through a spirited and comprehensive strategic planning session to provide a new trajectory for the council. SBIC’s executive leadership challenged the meeting participants to visualize and shape the future purpose and desired outcomes of the council and to work synergistically with the existing array of green building entities and audiences, whether they are commercial or residential, private-sector or federal. The charge to the new strategic planning task force, chaired by Chatelain, is to think outside the box, to move “Beyond Green". Greg Crawford noted, "Following our extensive discussion, we’ve concluded that our role and promise for beneficial change is stronger than ever in today's business and governmental communities. As we look to go “Beyond Green", the council will continue to help others meet their current goals and at the same time scan the horizon for better technology, new processes and ways to build even stronger cooperative relationships." The board also announced two new committee chairs, Tom Newton, (CertainTeed) for the marketing and promotion committee and Jared Blum, (Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association) for the policy committee. Alicia Ravetto (Alicia Ravetto Architects) will continue to chair the Technical Committee, and Gregg Ander (Southern California Edison) will continue to lead the High Performance Schools Committee. With these task force groups and committees shaping the details of the new strategic plan, the council looks forward to fulfilling its revitalized mission and vision, with existing and new partners alike as we move "Beyond Green”.
