New Persian Rug Marketing Groups to Bolster Intern

London, England, July 31, 2006--According to an IRNA report, a senior Commerce Ministry official said that several Persian carpet research and marketing groups will be established nationwide as part of efforts to promote international sales of the luxurious handicraft. According to Tehran based English-language newspaper Iran Daily in its Sunday edition, Morteza Faraji, deputy commerce minister and head of the National Iranian Carpet Center, said, while visiting carpet weaving centers in the western province of Charmahal-Bakhtiari, that the groups will try to obtain information about the preferences and needs of international customers of Persian rugs. "These groups will inform weavers and their associations of the latest preferences of international customers," he said, adding that Iran enjoys a high status in international carpet trade. The official said Iran accounts for $500 million of the total global carpet trade of $1.4 billion a year, stressing, however, that carpet designers and weavers need to pay greater attention to the international customers' preferences. He said over 200,000 carpet weavers are active nationwide, adding that the workers mostly demand insurance services. Faraji further said that weavers could improve the quality of their products once they receive financial facilities from the banking system. Some 90,000 people weave Persian rugs in the impoverished province.
