New Homes Appear To Be Increasing in Size

New York, NY, June 8, 2012 -- Some U.S. homebuilders are reporting that the trend toward smaller houses is apparently reversing itself, according to the Wall Street Journal.

KB Home reports that the average size of houses it has under contract is  2,079 square feet, an increase of 13% from last year.

And it says more customers are interested in models that are bigger than 3,500 square feet.

The Census Bureau says that the average size of a new home was 2,480 square feet in 2011, up 3.7% from 2010 and the first increase since 2007.

Luxury builder Toll Brothers also says that many of its buyers are also interested in larger homes.

Lower interest rates are apparently helping spur interest in larger homes, the Journal reports.
