NAM Supports U.S., Mexico Pilot Trucking Project

Washington, DC, September 10, 2007 – By allowing U.S. and Mexican trucks to operate across each country’s border through the year-long cross border demonstration project launched last week, the Bush Administration is spurring manufacturing growth and saving consumers money while protecting public safety on the road, according to the The National Association of Manufacturers.

Association President and CEO John Engler, former governor of Michigan, said the cross-border trucking demonstration project is an important step toward implementing the long-delayed agreement for U.S. and Mexican trucking companies to operate in each other’s markets as called for by NAFTA.

The existing process of having to transfer cargo from one truck to another several times just to get goods across the border causes delays and inefficiencies, driving up the cost of U.S. manufactured goods, Engler said.
