Mosaic Tile Design Enjoying A Renaissance

Ramona, CA, Dec. 9--Until recently, making mosaics required quite a bit of both time and patience, but recent innovations have changed all that for anyone with the most basic of computer experience. "The art of mosaic is currently experiencing unprecedented growth in popularity," says Sonia King, mosaic artist and author of the new book Mosaic Techniques & Traditions. "Enthusiasts range from the casual hobbyist to interior designers and professional artists. Improved availability of mosaic materials as well as technological advances now places this ancient art form within everyone's reach." Using software called TileCreator, the homeowner can import an image or design into the program; assign an appropriate tile color selection to it, and convert it into a mosaic tile masterpiece. The program produces a shopping list and a pattern in a paint-by-numbers type of chart that is very easy to follow, showing where each piece of tile is laid down to create the design. Key to the process is the use of the company's proprietary Tile Grids--plastic trays which hold the mosaic tile in sets of 225 or 841, depending on size tile used (3/4-inch or 3/8-inch tile). "With TileCreator, you can import an image and design your project, assign one of 30 provided tile color palettes to it, and create your design. Once you're satisfied with the size, color and design, you can print the pattern, the shopping list and the assembly instructions and begin building your project after purchasing your tile," said Simmons. "If you're uncomfortable putting the project together yourself, our tile specialists will send you the completed design, ready for installation, for an additional charge." If the design is a do-it-yourself project, included with the tile order will be the appropriate Tile Grid, a design preview of the mosaic and instructions on how to assemble it. The typical cost for a mosaic tile mural four feet wide by two feet high, created from TileCreator and assembled by the homeowner, is less than $100--and thousands of dollars less than if you purchased it already assembled from a tile or home improvement center. TileCreator can be used to create any size mosaic tile design--from a small kitchen design element to a mural spanning a swimming pool bottom.
