Mohawk’s Ed Williams to Retire
Dalton, GA, August 7, 2006--Ed Williams, senior vice president of marketing at Mohawk Industries, has announced his plans to retire. Williams career in the carpet industry spans more than 40 years. He began with Evans & Black Carpet Company in 1964, rising through a series of sales and managerial roles at E&B before joining Galaxy Carpet Mills in 1972. After a stint at Galaxy, Williams opened the doors of his own company, North American Carpet Corporation, which went on to become one of the industry’s leaders in the international export market. By coincidence, Williams sold North American to Galaxy in 1986 and rejoined the company. He went on to become president and COO of Galaxy Carpet Mills until the purchase of Galaxy by Mohawk Industries in 1996. Upon joining Mohawk in 1996, Williams took on the critical role of senior vice president of marketing and became the driving influence to unify all of the various brands Mohawk had purchased through acquisition. He oversaw the strategy and implementation of communications that brought more than a dozen well-established brands successfully under the umbrella of the Mohawk master brand. This strategy continues to this day as the Mohawk brand continues to hold a commanding awareness presence over all rivals in the industry. Since 1996, Williams has been a key member of the team that pioneered and expanded such industry leading marketing programs such as Mohawk Floorscapes, Mohawk ColorCenter, and Mohawk Floorz retail initiatives. He has been a long time champion of Mohawk programs in the area of training where he has actively guided the teams at Mohawk University into the industry’s largest and most comprehensive training network. He has overseen advertising and marketing programs that continue to drive the Mohawk brand and that have resulted in Mohawk being one of the best-recognized names in flooring. “Ed Williams is one of the reasons that Mohawk is the preferred brand of flooring by consumers and dealers alike,” said Tom Lape, president of Mohawk’s residential division. “His guidance and foresight amplified the impact of Mohawk’s acquisitions by making many diverse groups and ideas work as one. His work changed the face of our industry, and created new ways of reaching consumers. “Our dealers are seeing the impact of Ed Williams’ legacy on their bottom lines every day,” he said.
