Mohawk Wins Two Patent Protection Cases

St. Louis, MO, July 6, 2017-Mohawk won two separate legal cases last week as it relates to its patent protections, Stifel reports.

As of June 1, approximately $115 million of annual patent revenue expired, but the company will be generating approximately $35 million annually in patent revenue going forward.

“The first announcement came from the U.S. district Court in Florida on June 22 that awarded damages to Unilin (Mohawk’s Belgian-based laminate business) and permanent injunctions following a finding of infringement relating to Unilin’s ‘v-groove’ technology and Unilin’s embossed-in-register technology,” the analyst reports. “The orders were against Wood Floors LLC and related companies. Unilin has for years vigorously defended its patents to great effect.

Separately, on June 23, the Opposition Division of the European Patent Office confirmed the validity of Pergo’s (a company Mohawk acquired in early 2013) fold-down patent, which related to a fold-down system to install flooring panels. There was evidently an invalidity challenge filed on this patent that was rejected by this European Patent Office.”
