Mohawk Part of Komen Million Dollar Council

Dalton, GA, March 8, 2007--Mohawk Industries has raised more than $1.3 million for the fight against breast cancer in the last six years.  This, along with its creativity, has earned the company membership in the Million Dollar Council of partners with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Komen Million Dollar Council is a special group of corporate partners. In addition to a financial contribution of at least $1 million, each of these organizations has found new and innovative ways to spread two important messages: early detection saves lives, and only through research can a cure be found.

Mohawk joins other organizations such as BMW North America, Ford Division, Coldwater Creek, Yoplait, and American Airlines on the Council.  The Council members were recognized by the Komen Foundation in a recent ad in USA Today.

Mohawk has sponsored two promotional programs that included donations to the Komen Foundation.  “Specify for the Cure” was targeted at the commercial carpet market, while “Decorate for the Cure” raised money for the foundation through sales of carpet in the residential market.

“Mohawk and its employees are particularly proud of this honor, and we hope that our efforts will lead to a quicker cure for this disease,” said David Duncan, Vice President of Marketing for Mohawk.  The Susan G. Komen Foundation does outstanding work, and we’re glad to have the opportunity to help.”

The mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.  Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer among women in the United States.  More than 200,000 individuals will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and 40,000 will die from it. Eighty-five percent of the women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation recommends the following steps for early detection of the disease:

1.  Monthly breast self-examination beginning by age 20.

2. Clinical breast examinations by a trained medical professional at least every three years beginning at age 20 and annually after 40.

3.Annual screening mammography for women at age 40.  Women under 40 with a family history of the disease or other concerns about personal risk should consult with a professional about  risk assessment and when to begin mammography. The average size lump found by mammography when films can be compared is about 1 centimeter.  The average lump found by accident is 3.6 centimeters.
